Name Origins

by: Snape's Mistress

Mandy Brocklehurst - A clear reference to the Brocklehurst family dynasty, in Austria. The Brocklehursts have been purveyors of the finest exotic sausages to the wizarding world for centuries. Among the most popular flavors are: unicorn-curry, gillyweed-and-spider, and the dreadfully expensive dragons-blood-sausage.

Penelope Clearwater
- Penelope is remarkably similar to the Greek word for 'duck' - this, combined with the concept of clear water implies a woman who remains floating above the muck and filth, a pureblooded witch who cleverly terminates her relationship with Percy Weasley before he and his family name are tarnished in the daily tabloids.

Colin Creevey - 'Creevey' is very similar to 'creepy', which is an excellent word to describe young Colin, who has established himself as Harry Potter's number one fan, stalker, and Peeping Tom.

Rolanda Hooch - Hooch, of course, refers to illegally distilled alcohol such as moonshine or white lightening - both of which are also model names of popular racing brooms.

Viktor Krum - Krum is an illusion to "crumpet", which, in addition to being a delicious cake, is also a term of endearment for a sexually attractive man or woman. Can you think of a more suitable name for the delicious looking, dashing Romanian Seeker?

Alastor Moody - Students of demonology will be familiar the the term 'alastor', which is a subset of evil spirits and demons. Some legends even claim one particular demon named Alastor was the chief executioner of Hades. A highly appropriate and descriptive name for a character so tortured by his own inner demons.
