Book Seven

Rowling has said that characters will die. There's at least one death coming up in the seventh book, and probably a higher body count in the last two. Here are some guesses at who's going to live to the end of the story and who isn't...
. Harry dies, but comes back! Look at all the phoenix imagery we've gotten-- the feather in his wand, the help he's gotten from Fawkes, not to mention the Order of the Phoenix in book 5-- and keep in mind the parallels between him and Voldemort, who has come back to life after a fashion.

. Hermione lives but gets to have a massive emotional crisis.

. Ron lives and comes through the whole experience relatively undamaged.

. Neville lives although I predict some close moments when his powers really start to show themselves.

. Cho Chang lives if she doesn't get involved with Harry again and stays out of Ginny's way. (Involved with Harry? Since Harry's first attempt to ask her out didn't go well, and they were together a second time, they are plainly destined for each other. :-) Being the hero's girlfriend is a perilous occupation, but if she can avoid having a moment of true romance with him before, say, the second half of book 7, she should survive okay.

  • Snape is half vampire.
  • Draco is part veela and tries to use his chamrs to seduce Ginny to find out what he can about Harry.

. Colin Creevey dies. (I say that because I don't like him. All annoying people will die in this book.)

. Ginny Weasley lives because she's already had her encounter with almost certain death.

. Draco lives to antagonize Harry well into the future.

. However, Crabbe or Goyle (or possibly both) will die. (Same reason as Colin Creevey.)

. Dudley lives and maybe even grows up.

. Dumbledore didn't really die, but, in the grand tradition of all-powerful paternal wizards, turns up again in time for the denoument.

. Professor Snape dies. Either it's a moderately painful death when he pushes Harry or Neville over the edge, or it's a spectacularly horrible death at the hands of Voldemort, or it could be from the Dark Force Defense League on a vampire hunt, but the evil-turned-good character never ever gets to live to the end of this kind of story. I know Rowling has been going against a few clichés, but I don't think she's going to tackle this one. Snape will probably be lucky if he just dies, and there are no dementors around...

. Professor McGonagall dies a proud and heroic death.

. Lucius Malfoy dies due to dissension in the ranks of evil.

. One of each of the following pairs of people dies: Vernon and Petunia Dursley, Fred and George Weasley, Hermione's parents, Fudge and Umbridge

. Sirius Black and Remus Lupin both live because the power that the Dark Lord knows not comes out when Harry rescues Sirius from behind the Veil.

. Peter Pettigrew dies doing something good.

. At least one more Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher dies.

. Voldemort dies and his soul is absorbed by a dementor.

. Hermione will become Head Girl, and a properly registered Animagus.

. Dumbledore will retire at the end of book 7 to take up with Madame Rosmerta.

. The word "scar" at the very end of book 7 (Rowling says it'll be the last word at the moment) will refer to a scar on someone other than Harry.

. Profesor Flitwick will have to intervene to get Ron and Hermione together, probably in the form of giving Ron some tips.

. Further romantic predictions: Ginny ends up with Neville, Fleur with Sirius, and Hagrid with an as yet unintroduced female giant.
